Redhawk's Playoff Hopes Crushed

The varsity Redhawks football team charged into Saturday’s game against Mt. Abe with high hopes of traveling to Springfield for a playoff game on Halloween. Mt. Abe foiled those hopes with an 8-0 victory.

CVU won the toss and elected to receive for the first series of the game. The Redhawks gained a first down with runs by Crawford Morris and Tommy Powers, but a gamble at a fourth down conversion gave the Eagles the ball on CVU’s 40 yard line. The Eagles seized the opportunity, and with runs by Pat West and Josh Masterson, moved steadily to CVU’s goal line. Masterson scored the touchdown for Mt. Abe, while West ran in for the 2 point conversion.

The Redhawks threatened twice in the first half, but a penalty against CVU and a sack killed Redhawk momentum on the first drive. On the second drive, Quarterback Konnor Fleming complete passes to Stephan Fortin, JP Benoit and Tommy Powers before the clock ran out.

CVU didn’t fare any better in the second half in spite of an interception by Fleming, and good runs by Powers, Morris, and Eric Palmer. Some good defensive efforts (notably Josh Duncan, Robert Charland, Matt Long) kept the Eagles from scoring again.

CVU ends its season with a 3-5 record overall, and is 3-3 in Division III play. The Redhawks will be sending Matt Gault to the North-South All Star Game in Middlebury, slated to start at noon on November 15 in Alumni Stadium. Congratulations to Matt and to the Redhawks on their 2008 season.
